Is Wix a Good Platform for My Business Website?

Building websites can be difficult and confusing.

It can feel like there are a million questions to answer - everything from cost and choosing a specific website platform to the information to include... or whether or not you should pay someone to build it for you. Many businesses decide to take on the challenge of building their website themselves, often to save money.

The questions are practically endless.

Enter Wix.

For entrepreneurs and business owners alike, Wix is an easy and affordable means of creating a website for their business. It seems like Wix has everything you need to build a successful website with tools that make it simple to build and customize your website for both desktop and mobile, as well as other helpful plug-ins for website usability. It helps that Wix has had an incredible advertising push in the last year or so, making it endlessly appealing to small business owners.

But should building a website really be as easy as Wix makes it out to be?

When you take a step back and look at DIY website platforms such as Wix, Squarespace or Weebly, you’ll find that sometimes easy isn’t always better.

The Dark Side of Wix

Here at Lunar Logic, we are passionate about SEO. We enjoy helping clients improve and understand the SEO of their website so they can reach their goals.

Which is why we were disappointed to discover that Wix does not support SEO web crawlers due to being entirely coded in Javascript.

What does that mean?

Usually, web pages are expressed in HTML, which Google can review. This is important to Google, as HTML provides structure and some semantics of the text on the page. Wix, on the other hand, expresses the webpage in Javascript which is then converted into HTML. Google does not perform this extra operation, and therefore cannot crawl the page.

SEO web crawlers are important tools that can be utilized to track things like keywords, opportunities and domain authority, and report missing metadata tags or 4xx errors.

Now, Wix does have its own SEO add-on called the SEO Wiz tool. Found in the user-dashboard of a Wix site, it requires you to answer some basic questions about your business (name, location, and keywords) before creating a personalized SEO plan for your website. While helpful, there are a few downsides to this tool.

  • You only have the option for five keywords

  • You have to index your site on Wix so it will show up more quickly on Google

  • Unless you implement Wix’s SEO Wix tool, there is no way to add meta or alt tags, or even page titles.

  • There is no option to add canonical tags

  • Wix’s SEO Wiz tool does not crawl images

Now, keeping in mind that all businesses are not built alike, Wix’s SEO Wiz may be a perfectly adequate tool for some businesses that want to keep it simple. Other businesses looking for more customization and more control over their SEO should choose a different website building platform.

What if you outgrow your website, or you need more functionality?

Bad news. With Wix, you can’t export your data.

Because your website and all of its content are “hosted exclusively” on Wix’s servers, there is no export option. This means unless you manually transfer everything from your Wix site, you’ll have to start from scratch.

Speed & Security

While we’re on the subject of website hosting, as mentioned above, all Wix sites are hosted on Wix’s servers, meaning that the System Administrators at Wix are responsible for the security of your website.

Historically speaking, Wix has been an incredibly secure website, and you don’t have to worry about caching or security patches for vulnerabilities.

But there’s a catch.

While the hosting does have good security, that also means that the millions of Wix websites are all hosted in the same place. This diminishes the speed of your website resulting in potentially lost customers.

What Are Your Options?

As we mentioned above, no two businesses are the same. What works for one business may not work for the another. There are many benefits to talking to digital marketing agencies; here are the top three reasons.

1. Expertise

You are an expert in your business. Like you, we are experts in the chaotic and sometimes confusing world of digital marketing. Between keeping up with current trends for social media and staying on track of new business tools for websites and ad optimization, it can be a lot to juggle.

A digital marketing agency takes care of your marketing needs so that you can focus on running your business.

When you choose a digital marketing agency, we keep track of the things that will help you succeed so you can focus on running your business.

2. ROI (Return on Investment)

At the end of the day, the most important part of a business’s marketing efforts is the ROI. When looking at the bigger picture of lead generation between the SEO, the SEM, and social media, it can be hard to know what is bringing the best ROI for your business.

Digital marketing agencies can help center your marketing efforts around activities that generate the best ROI for your business.

3. Partnerships & Access

Partnerships are key in every business relationship. Digital marketing agencies are not only enthusiastic about the relationships with their clients but are also excited about their business partnerships. These partnerships are an important tool that helps digital marketing agencies support their clients.

For example, Lunar Logic is a premier Google Partner.

This doesn’t just mean our analysts certified in Google search, display, shopping and video. It also shows that we are continuously meeting Google’s standards for successful management of ad campaigns. It also means that Google trusts us to help you succeed by utilizing the litany of Google’s products.

With Google consistently changing Adwords throughout the year, it’s our job to stay on top of all of the changes and the new offerings for ad campaigns to continue helping your business’s ads succeed.

Sometimes, ads will be denied due to copyright issues or other reasons. Being a Google premier partner gives us access to Google representatives to help navigate the issue so we can get your ads back up and running in a timely manner.

In Conclusion

While the old saying goes “if ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” sometimes a new start or a refresh can help your business find a new audience or generate new leads. Digital marketing agencies have the ability to do a lot of cool things to help their clients succeed.

If you are currently utilizing Wix for your website, don’t panic. There are still options to improve your SEO with tools such as Google Search console, Google Analytics, or even Wix’s SEO Wiz tool.

Whichever path you chose, digital marketing agencies are always happy to help new and old clients with continued success.
